The increasing number of students in Indonesia underscores the need for universities to meet ideal educational standards aligned with SDG 4. In 2010, there were approximately 4.7 million students supported by 230,000 institutions, and by 2023, this number grew to 8.6 million students across 316,000 institutions. However, the current student-to-university ratio of 1:30 still falls short of the ideal 1:20 ratio. Many Learning Management Systems (LMS) lack optimized features for quizzes, materials, forums, and class management. Administrative burdens and challenges in accessing relevant information point to the need for a more effective educational platform to enhance productivity.

EduClass.AI is an AI-based application designed to enhance the learning experience for both lecturers and students through effective learning management features. Here are the main features offered:

  • Material Chatbot: Provides quick responses to student questions regarding course material, facilitating learning without needing to navigate the LMS first.

  • Quiz Generator: Assists lecturers in automatically creating quizzes, including multiple-choice and essay formats, based on the provided materials.

  • Discussion Forum: Offers a space for discussions, enabling collaboration and interaction among students to deepen their understanding of the material.

This application focuses on easy access to information and reducing administrative burdens to create a more productive learning environment.

Process

As a UX Researcher in the development of EduClass.AI, I followed these steps to ensure the application meets the needs of its users:

  1. Problem Identification: Conducted initial data collection to understand the challenges faced by lecturers, students, and administrators in the learning process through surveys and interviews.

  2. User Analysis:

    • Lecturers: Identified their needs for efficient course management, easy content delivery, and tools for assessing student performance. Key pain points included time constraints and difficulties in engaging students.

    • Students: Analyzed their requirements for immediate access to information, interactive learning tools, and collaborative spaces. Pain points involved navigating complex LMS platforms and the need for quick answers to course-related queries.

    • Administrators: Assessed their need for effective management tools that streamline administrative tasks, monitor student progress, and ensure compliance with educational standards. Pain points included cumbersome reporting processes and the challenge of providing relevant resources to both students and lecturers.

  3. User Journey Mapping: Created user journey maps for each user group to identify pain points and opportunities for improvement within their learning and teaching experiences.

  4. Technology Research: As a data analyst, I researched AI technologies such as prompt engineering and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to effectively address user challenges. This research informed the development of the chatbot and other features, ensuring they could provide accurate, context-aware responses to user inquiries.

  5. Usability Testing: Conducted usability testing sessions with real users from each group (lecturers, students, and administrators) to gather feedback on the prototypes. Observed interactions and noted any issues or confusion that arose during the testing.

This user-centered approach, combined with AI technology insights, ensured that EduClass.AI effectively addresses the unique challenges faced by lecturers, students, and administrators in the educational landscape.

  4. Scalable Learning Solutions: As an innovative LMS, EduClass.AI can adapt to the needs of various educational institutions, providing a scalable solution that can accommodate growing student populations and evolving educational standards.

  5. Support for Lifelong Learning: By integrating AI and modern learning techniques, EduClass.AI promotes a culture of continuous learning and adaptation, equipping students and educators with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly changing educational environment.
